Day of the Dead Edition · A tribute to the great singers of the past

One full day, in person, in Mexico City.

After more than 300 performances of The Phantom of the Opera, we want to share what we have learned and what this experience has given us as artists.

Because of the number of applications we received, and because you asked for it, we decided to open a second edition of Beyond the Mask. This time we will pay tribute to the great singers of the past: we will explore the techniques, tools and lessons they left us, studying their methods and how we can apply them to vocal technique and to interpretation when preparing a character or stepping on stage.

A chance to learn from their legacy and find our own voice.

What will we share?

Learning from the great voices

Listening to their legacy to discover new possibilities in our own voice.

  • What we can learn from their breathing, phrasing, diction and use of vocal colour.
  • How to study a performance and recognise the choices that make it memorable.
  • How to explore their tools within the possibilities of your own voice.
  • How to turn an artistic reference into a personal interpretation.

Bringing a song and a character to life

The voice tells a story when we know what we want to say.

  • How to connect text, intention, body and voice.
  • How to discover what your character wants and who they are talking to.
  • How to use phrasing, pauses and nuance to give meaning to a performance.
  • How to apply what we learn from the great performers when preparing a song, a scene or a character.

Getting ready for the stage

From the studio to a presence that connects with the audience.

  • How to build a study method for your artistic piece.
  • How to work on breath, support and expression without losing freedom.
  • How to find presence and focus in front of an audience.
  • How to take new direction and use it to discover other possibilities in your performance.

Participants

During the masterclass, a group of artists will be selected to work directly with us on the artistic piece they have prepared.

Your application video will help us get to know you, understand what you would like to work on and guide our selection.

The piece can be a song, a scene or a musical theatre excerpt. We will work on its vocal and interpretive possibilities, applying the tools we share during this edition.

We will also share

  • A meet & greet with Lina and Edward.
  • An ofrenda honouring the great singers of the past.
  • Q&A: a space for your questions.
  • Certificates of participation.

Why Beyond the Mask

Beyond the Mask was born from Edward and Lina's wish to give back a little of the love and support they received during the run of The Phantom of the Opera.

We want to share what we have learned — tips, advice and secrets — so you can use them on your own artistic path and keep growing, as people and as artists.
